To be a Wedding & Events Host [and Planner], like any other jobs or professions, is not easy. Preparing for the program and/or writing the script alone is no minor thing to do because it requires total professionalism.  You have to be keen and accurate and sensitive enough in terms of the names and details to include that'll need emphasis in the acknowledgment or plugging during the program.

Of course, choosing the most appropriate background music or songs to play in between segments of the program is important. They should be complimentary and sequential. 

You should abide, respect, and execute the program the way the couple or celebrator wants. Go with the flow and dance with the music. Meaning, be flexibly attentive to any insertions the celebrating family may opt to. Be a troubleshooter when flaws occur unintentionally at the middle of the program. Eliminate dead air; shutdown boredom. Demonopolize tension by throwing some significant jokes making everyone smile, to just relax, and to enjoy the moment.
Here's a simply basic tip that I've kept in mind and you may adapt to it and utilize it for yourself, too. I just find it effective in a way:
Everybody's looking at you --at your outfit, your shoes, your hair, everything! Accept the crowd's attention. Embrace the spotlight. Stand on your feet with equal weight. Pull your shoulders back and your stomach in. Look at someone in your audience straight in the eye. Smile. Greet. Think as if it's your moment, own it. When you feel a bit nervous, that's normal. That happens to anyone even the best host in the world. However, you have to conquer it. Never allow nervousness to prevail. "Best way to conquer stage fright is to know what you're talking about, " says Michael Mescon. Stay confidently professional, energetic, amiable, lively, personable, receptive, and organized.
Remember, the secret to remarkable hosting [or speaking] is your unique personality --imposing your very own style. However, your technique and disposition as a host may depend on the type or level of presentation of the event --fine & formal, semi-formal, or smart-casual. Whatever and however it is, you have to be creative in many ways. Speaking slang or in an American accent is never a major requirement. Just be yourself comfortably. Be natural. Note that your main role being the host is to make the event fun and memorable --nothing less, nothing more!

To be an admirably effective events host [and speaker] is a continuous process. As a fact, what I usually do everyday is an exercise for the tongue to let it not sleep by reading out loud anything I get to hold. When I go to the bathroom, I seem like I'm a crazy guy that I do monologue. Well, that's, for me, is nothing but a good rehearsal. Bruce Lee says, "Practice makes perfect." My strategically unique style of hosting, I must admit, was not taught in my Journalism course of study, not in Computer Engineering even. It, rather, has just come out naturally maybe because it's what I passionately love to do.

Hosting started to become my passion when I first held a microphone as the Master of Ceremonies of our Seniors' Ball way back in High School. 'Twas not because I was the Class Salutatorian, but it was my English Teacher who made the pick that I should lead. English was undeniably my super favorite subject, while Mathematics --my waterloo.

Michael Schumacher says, "Once something is a passion, the motivation is there."
